Make Your Own Fraction Kits and Transparencies
Suggestions for Making Transparencies
- Trace patterns onto colored overhead transparency film.
- Cut out two circles for each. You will need 4 halves, 6 thirds, 8 fourths, 12 sixths, 18 ninths and at least 16 twelfths.
- Prepare a clear transparency of the background circles.
Suggested colors:
If possible, use the same colors as you use for the manipulatives. It may be difficult to procure all colors. If so, make halves yellow, thirds green, fourths red, sixths blue, eighths yellow, ninths green, twelfths red. Wholes can be made from opaque paper.
Suggestions for Making Manipulatives, Quick and Dirty
- Run two copies of each page of patterns per student on white paper.
- Have students color and cut out the pieces.
- Store in envelopes.
Suggestions for Permanent Manipulatives to Use Year after Year
- Make one copy per child of each fraction circle on construction or other sturdy paper as well as a few extras to replace lost pieces. Use the colors suggested at the bottom of the page or others of your choice. I don't have ready-to-use graphics for these yet, but I hope to soon. You can make your own five to six-inch circles and divide them into fractional parts with a compass.
- Laminate.
- Cut out the pieces or have a dependable adult do it.
- Store the pieces in a 6x9 manila envelope that has been laminated. Include two background circles.
Suggested colors:
- Yellow for halves
- Orange for thirds
- Red for fourths
- Purple for sixths
- Blue for eighths
- Green for ninths
- Pink for twelfths
- Brown for wholes
- Background circles on tagboard
