Abstract
Notes:
- The American Academy of Pediatrics recognized SBS as a "clearly definable medical condition" in the early 1990s.
- General symptoms such as lethargy, poor feeding, irritibility and failure to thrive may be attributed to viris or colic.
- The person bringing the child in for care may not be aware of what happened.
- Conditions including subacute bacterial endocarditis, anemia and thrombocytopenia may cause retinal hemorrhage and should be ruled out with lab tests.
- This article includes some information on how to determine the age of blood by its composition.
