Notes:

• This article discusses delayed deterioration following closed head injury. Only four of 124 patients were under 10 years of age.
• Deaths occurred within 48 hours or after 7 days or longer after injury.
• 7/24 patients who deteriorated had large delayed intracerebral hematomas. These occurred randomly over days 2 to 7.
• Deterioration was three times more frequent in patients with hematomas than in those with diffuse brain injury.
