Management of Delayed Posttraumatic Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Notes:

• Delayed intracerebral hemorrhage occurs in about 7% of severely head-injured patients.
• There appears to be an increased predisposition for delayed hemorrhage among patients with secondary ischemic insults.
• Only 20% of the hemorrhages studied were present on CT scans when patients were admitted to the hospital. 20% were diagnosed later than 72 hours following the injury.
• It is important to assess the patient's coagulation status and obtain a history of medications that may affect blood clotting.
