Avoid mass nouns like chalk where the determiner a is not used. Also avoid plurals like scissors for the time being. Teach words requiring the determiner an (such as eraser) separately.

• Say This is a pen. Motion and student repeats.
• Continue until the child says the sentence with the object as a cue.
