Materials:

• Two puppets or two hats could be used, or two students can act these out.

Language to be Taught:

• Hello! How are you?
• Fine, thank you. How are you?
• Fine, thank you.

Note: In this culture, people generally say fine or OK, regardless of how they actually feel.

Possible Procedures

• Demonstrate with students or with puppets.
• Demonstrate by turning your body from side to side and/or changing hats to show that a different person is talking.
• To elicit responses, say Hello, (student's name), how are you? Then, quietly, say Fine, thank you. How are you? and motion for the student to repeat.
• Use greetings daily and encourage other students to use this greeting with the non-English speaking student.
