Hold up pencil. Say This is a pencil. Student repeats.
Hold up two or more pencils. Say These are pencils. Student repeats.
Contrast on board if the student can read. This is a pencil. These are pencils. Show that a means "one."
Continue. If child makes a mistake, hold up two fingers and wait for correction. If he's forgotten, supply the answer and have him repeat a few times.
Mix up singular and plural. If child makes a mistake, hold up two fingers to alert him to correct.
