Chart of Content (Structural)
See the Chart of Content (2 pages) for a summary of objectives for beginning students of English as a Second Language. This section and the next contain explanations and examples of items on the chart. No "curriculum" as such existed for English as a Second Language in my district when I first wrote this handbook. The chart was to help the teacher and tutor get an idea of the scope of E.S.L. Also, it can be used as a summary to facilitate communication between aides, E.S.L. teacher and classroom teachers, or sent on to a new school or teacher as part of the permanent file.
Precise content depends to a great extent on the age, ability level, interests and native literacy of individual students. The E.S.L. teacher and tutors must pace sequential instruction and formulate specific objectives with these factors in mind. This handbook includes one possible sequence of beginning objectives and lessons.
Again, this is just one way of organizing the content of English as a Second Language, and is intended primarily to offer some structure that may be helpful to inexperienced teachers of E.S.L.
