Scriptures Supporting Study of Old Testament Types

  1. All Scripture is about Jesus. He's on every page of the Bible. Jesus is the Antitype, the elevated type, of all types and shadows in the Old Testament.
    • Luke 24:25-27: He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
    • Luke 24:44: He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”
    • John 5:39: You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me...
  2. Everything in the Old Testament was written as an example, to teach us.
    • Romans 15:4: For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
  3. Adam is a type of Christ. Adam was not deceived.
    • Romans 5:14: Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who was a pattern of the one to come.
    • 1 Timothy 2:14: And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.
  4. Types and patterns of Christ exist throughout Scripture.
    • 1 Corinthians 10:3-6: They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered over the desert. Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.
