Sodom's Salt PillarsMount Sodom

As we drove along the southern shore of the Dead Sea, I was surprised to see a sign saying "Mt. Sodom" and a trail winding up the mountain.

"Stop!" I said. "Let's go for a hike." I read in one of my travel guides that Mt. Sodom is a mountain of salt, and it is true. Under the dirt are pillars and crystalline formations of table salt.

In the photo, Dennis is climbing some of the stairs that were on the trail. His hand is on a pillar-like formation of salt. This photo also shows how steep the mountains are around the Dead Sea.

This area is called Sedom on the maps, and is likely near the location of Biblical Sodom. The ruins of the actual city are thought to be under the Dead Sea.
