The LakeThe Lake Sings
October 8-11, 1998

In October, we heard the lake freeze. When we arrived, there was still open water, with dozens of tundra swans massing for the flight south. Then it froze, singing eerie whale songs as cracks snaked across the lake. We walked on 2" of clear ice near shore. Muskrats swam right below our feet and burbot wiggled in the sand. We saw a huge school of whitefish in the creek. The lake became a window to another world.
